Iceland's flagship airline, Icelandair, is now providing four direct flights from Seattle, U.S., to Reykjavik, Iceland, a week.

Icelandair has scheduled direct flights from Seattle's Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) to Keflavik International Airport departing every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. These flights are to depart at 16:30 in Seattle and arrive in Keflavik at 06:45.

The flights from Seattle will then connect with Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm and London, offering up to 4 hours faster connection times from Seattle to Scandinavia than possible through other European hubs. Flights to Helsinki, Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Paris will also be available via Reykjavik.

"Icelandair is pleased to now offer more choices to Europe's top destinations from Seattle," stated Thorsteinn Egilsson, General Manager - The Americas. "We also look forward to partnering with Seattle-Tacoma International Airport in serving all westward travelers, including the large Scandinavian population of the Pacific Northwest."

Additionally, a new reciprocal frequent flier partnership between Icelandair, Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air has been established, as well as a new codeshare agreement. This codeshare agreement will allow Icelandair to place its code on select Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air flights. The frequent flier partnership, scheduled to launch this fall, allows Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan members to earn and redeem miles on Icelandair flights between Seattle and Iceland and throughout Europe.

'Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air are delighted to welcome Icelandair as its newest Mileage Plan and codeshare partner,' commented Rick Rasmussen, Alaska Airlines' director of customer loyalty and marketing programs. 'Icelandair offers affordable and convenient options for our customers to earn or redeem miles for travel to Iceland and beyond through their easy connections to popular European destinations.'

Connections through Icelandair's hub in Reykjavik are still available to eighteen destinations in Scandinavia (including Copenhagen, Oslo, Stavanger, and Stockholm), UK (including London, Manchester) and Continental Europe (including Amsterdam, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Munich, and Paris). Icelandair also continues to offer its service to Iceland from Boston, New York-JFK, Minneapolis/St. Paul (seasonal), Orlando Sanford (seasonal), Halifax (seasonal) and Toronto (seasonal).

The Timanfaya Volcano Park is one of the most popular national parks in Spain – and the most visited tourist attraction on Lanzarote. Welcoming close to 900,000visitors per year. Thanks to the surreal scenery created here by enormous eruptions that rocked Lanzarote during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Now it is possible to enjoy an interactive virtual tour of this other worldly terrain – without even touching down on Lanzarote. By visiting the www.lanzaroteguidebook.com website – where visitors can view a 360 degree panorama of the region, featuring directional controls and zoom functions. Which can be viewed without having to install any additional software or plug ins on their computer.

According to Lanzarote Guidebook publisher Nick Ball; 'The Timanfaya Volcano Park is one of Lanzarote´s greatest natural wonders and features high on the itineraries of most visitors to the island. Our new interactive tour gives everyone the chance to explore this fascinating region and we plan to add more 360 panoramic shots of other key attractions on the island on an ongoing basis'.

The Fire Mountains of Timanfaya were created by huge eruptions during the 1730´s that lasted for over six years. With a further repeat performance taking place in 1824. This volcanic activity wiped out farmland and villages in what had once been one of Lanzarote´s most fertile regions – forcing many islanders to flee and start a new life abroad.

Today the surreal lavascapes and spent volcanic peaks occupy an area of around 200km square – dominating the interior of this small Canary Island. And the eruptions have had a profound impact on many aspects of life on Lanzarote. Influencing for example the local viniculture, as local producers adapted to the eruptions by using volcanic stone chippings called picon as a type of mulch for their vines. Whilst many of the paintings of Lanzarote´s most famous son, the artist César Manrique, reflect the colours and textures of the Timanfaya region.

Lanzarote´s volcanoes are currently dormant – but temperatures just below the earth's surface in the region are still extremely high. As park wardens are only too happy to demonstrate by pouring cold water into bore holes in the earth's surface – which are then expelled just seconds later as jets of steam. An image which can be viewed on the 360 panoramic shot now available on www.lanzaroteguidebook.com

Cleveland, OH July 21, 2010—Alphaport, a Cleveland-based provider of engineering services, applied technology, knowledge management and professional development services, recently announced the successful development of a combined Exciter-Igniter ignition system. The innovative ignition system, a product of Alphaport's partnership with NASA, bolsters the viability of environmentally responsible, non-toxic propellants in rocket engines used for space transportation.
The compact Exciter-Igniter system, initially developed for potential use in NASA space vehicles, such as the Orion Crew Vehicle and Altair lunar lander, presents an opportunity for the commercial space transportation industry. Testing at NASA's Glenn Research Center and Alphaport facilities with a safer, less volatile, methane-oxygen mixture demonstrates a ground-breaking opportunity: using green fuels in space transportation.
Handling of toxic fuel, traditionally used in space rocket engines, prompted NASA to turn its attention to using safer and operationally less expensive fuel sources. Through a NASA funded SBIR Phase II program, Alphaport delivered the high-performance Exciter-Igniter capable of igniting methane-oxygen mixtures. In addition, the igniter reduces engine complexity, increasing consistency and reliability.
The Exciter-Igniter was recently featured as a NASA Glenn Research Center Success Story. The release highlighted the igniter's reduced environmental impact and improved performance capabilities.
Although Alphaport's hermetically sealed Exciter-Igniter is designed to reduce the risks of high-voltage pulse degradation cause by corona in ignition cables designed for space operation, the device can be used in any engine that requires a spark ignition. Terrestrial applications include aircraft engines, power turbines, and even land vehicles and watercraft.
While multiple applications are possible, Alphaport's initial interest is in commercial space transportation. 'With the potential of a competitive and burgeoning commercial space transportation industry, we have found our market [for the igniter],' says Alphaport President, Anthony J. Miranda.

Rolls-Royce, the global power systems company, announced today it has won an order from Air Transat for extended TotalCare® services and Trent 700EP (Enhanced Performance) engine kits, which are designed to improve efficiency and environmental performance.

The new seven year extended TotalCare services contract covers five Trent 700-powered Airbus A330s, four of which were covered under previous TotalCare arrangements. The new EP kits will be incorporated into the airline's Trent 700 engines over the next two years.

Lewis Prebble, Rolls-Royce, Vice President of Customer Business, North America said: 'We have a long term relationship with Air Transat and are delighted that they have become the latest customer to choose Trent 700EP technology. This will deliver positive economical and environmental performance benefits for our customer.'

Allen B. Graham, President and CEO of Air Transat said: 'Environmental improvement and cost effectiveness are cornerstones of Air Transat fleet operations. By transferring the latest Rolls-Royce technology to our A330s we are able to reduce fuel burn, minimize greenhouse gas emissions and our costs.'

The Trent 700 EP kit will yield a reduction in fuel burn of more than one per cent and CO2 emissions levels of more than 800 tonnes per aircraft per year for Air Transat.

To date, more than 150 Trent 700EP kits have been sold. The Trent 700 is the only engine specifically designed for the Airbus A330. It remains the market leader for the aircraft with a captured market share of 75 per cent over the last three years and 81 per cent market share in 2009. The engine offers outstanding levels of performance while delivering the highest available thrust.
